memories

Taken on 31 March 2004 ... the last day for the National Library building @ Stamford Road to be operational. This grand dame which was officially opened on 12 Nov 1960, had since been demolished and made way for the new Singapore Management University. Sad to see this building go because it used to be my hideout during my primary and secondary school days.. where I used to work as a Library Technician for a short period of time. The most memorable "building fixture" was the Schindler's Lift which was only used by the staff - it was as old as the building, it broke down quite frequently. Once you stepped in there and the door was closed, you felt as if you were going to be trapped inside it for eternality.

Very soon, the new National Library building at Victoria Street (a stone throw from the old location) will be opened - more advanced, high tech and sophisticated - getting ready to serve the new generation with lots of challenging needs .. and that's good. But I am very thankful for the honour to grow up with this old building - an important landmark in my life's history.

Thank you for being part of my life.
